Tonin, also known as Uncle Tonin and Melatonin, is an inhabitant of the Colony who arrived on Vertumna aboard the Stratospheric along with the player character.
Profile[]
Tonin occupies the role of Chief Surveyor in Expeditions before Utopia replaces him in Late Wet of Year 2.
He is a sweet and caring man loved by the people of the Colony.
Relationships[]
Tonin is Tammy's father. He cares very much for his daughter. According to her, he gave her the same augment as him, enhanced hearing, because he expected her to become a surveyor just like him and wanted her to be safe in the wilds.
Interactions[]
Tonin will block the way in front of the gates leading out of the Colony, preventing Sol from going outside. He can be convinced that Sol is brave enough (requires 20 Bravery) or tough enough (requires 20 Toughness), which will allow Sol to go out on expeditions upon reaching the age of 13 in Mid Quiet of Year 4. If Sol has not yet unlocked sneaking out upon completing either requirement, an interaction with Dys will be triggered in which he will discreetly point Sol towards the hidden grate in the Garrison leading outside, unlocking the activity.
Events[]
Manticore Attack[]
Tonin is attacked by a manticore while on expedition in Late Wet of Year 2. He is killed if Sol does not save him.
It is possible to save Uncle Tonin. To do so, Sol is required to have unlocked sneaking out, either by having a high enough relationship with Dys before Year 2 (at least 10 points) or by clearing the skill check with Tonin at the gate (requires either 20 Bravery or 20 Toughness). Sol must then sneak out on Late Wet of Year 2. The boss event to the southwest of the Colony Outskirts is represented by a manticore, and, upon interacting, shows Tonin being attacked by the creature. With a high enough Bravery skill (10), Sol can play a card challenge to trick the manticore, which saves Tonin's life if won. If the requirement is not met, Sol can either go back to the Colony for help or flee, which both result in the man's death.
Tonin can also be saved by talking with Tammy in Late Wet, but only if you witness Tonin die, save a new file, and load a separate save made at or before the beginning of Late Wet. Even if Sol saved Tonin in a previous life, the option to tell Tammy will only appear if Tonin’s death is witnessed. When this condition is met, Sol has the option to tell Tammy about their premonition. They can convince Tonin to stay (Persuasion Challenge, need 15 persuasion or higher), or hide sleeping medicine in his tea. Telling Tammy about the premonition will lower the requirement for the Persuasion challenge to 5 or higher. On a success, Tonin does not go on the expedition and is saved. If Sol puts sleeping pills in Tonin's tea, he collapses and Sol gets in trouble, but he does not go on the expedition and is saved.
No matter what happens, Utopia replaces Tonin as Chief Surveyor following this event. If Sol successfully saves him, Uncle Tonin retires and lets Utopia take his position, claiming that he is no longer apt to perform his duties as proved by his brush with death. If Tonin is alive and Sol doesn’t assume the role of Second Surveyor, Tonin will come out of retirement to assist Utopia.
